Depending on the temperature, the heat sensitive crystals change color. A material that can act like "muscles and nerves" has been selected by NASA as the Government Invention of the Year. The composite material is composed of ceramic fibers that can bend or flex when a current is applied to them — much like a muscle. The material also generates a current when it is vibrated or flexed, giving users the ability to use the next-gen piezoelectric material as a vibration detector as well. The primary use of the material has been in helicopter blade research and vibration monitoring on the Space Shuttle launch pad and crawler. Titanium is a reactive metal that forms compounds with less than optimum properties. Heated in air, the part surface contains brittle carbides, nitrides, and oxides, each of which can reduce the fatigue resistance and notch toughness of the weld and heat-affected zone (HAZ). Not only do you need to protect the surface being welded, you also need to protect the back side of the weld, which is just as sensitive. This is why in many factories titanium welding is done in "glove boxes" in a complete inert environment.

Thermal expansion valve

A thermal expansion valve (often abbreviated as TEV, TXV or TX valve) is a component in refrigeration and air conditioning systems that controls the amount of refrigerant flow into the evaporator thereby controlling the superheating at the outlet of the evaporator. Thermal expansion valves are often referred to generically as "metering devices". Flow control, or metering, of the refrigerant is accomplished by use of a temperature sensing bulb filled with a similar gas as in the system that causes the valve to open against the spring pressure in the valve body as the temperature on the bulb increases. As temperatures in the evaporator decrease, so does the pressure in the bulb and therefore on the spring causing the valve to close. An air conditioning system with a TX valve is often more efficient than other designs that do not use one.

The skin is the largest organ in the human body. Severe damage to large areas of skin exposes the human organism to dehydration and infections that can result in death.Traditional ways of dealing with large losses of skin have been to use skin from other parts of a patient's body (such the thigh) or from a different person/cadaver. The former approach has the disadvantage that there may not be enough skin available, while the latter suffers from the possibility of rejection or infection. To solve these issues, research is being done on artificial skin. Typically, a collagen scaffold is used (the protein that underlies the structure of skin), which can be additionally seeded with patient's own cells, or with foreskin from newborns that was removed during circumcision. Additional technologies, such as an autologous spray-on skin produced by Avita Medical, are being tested in efforts to accelerate healing and minimize scarring.

BAE Systems and the Office of Naval Research have jointly developed a new type of artificial bone capable of supporting new bone growth and simultaneously porous enough to be absorbed by the body. In current orthopedic implant materials, the affected bone is in danger of becoming too weak before substantial mass loss of the implant. With use of current materials such as copolymerized polylactic and polyglycolic acids (PLA/PGA) as bone fillers, patients may find bones are too weak to carry any load long before significant amounts of bone have grown to replace the eroded prosthesis . The ceramic coated biocompatible plastic would be broken down over the next 18 months by the body after bone cells had filled the pores in the ceramic. All that would remain of the implant would be some of the original polymer core encased in sturdy bone tissue.

A Rheometric nozzle capable of holding standard Rosand capillary rheometry dies was attached to the nozzle of the Battenfeld M50 as shown below. A charge of melt is produced by extruding directly into the injection chamber (bypassing the metering piston) and then the machine is told to inject, acting in the same manner as a conventional cappillary rheometer, with the pressure reading taken from the Dynisco force tranducer behind the injection pin. The main disadvantage of this method is that the pressure reading is not a direct melt measurement, it incorporates other forces such as the friction between the injection pin and nozzle. Even with no polymer in the injection chamber, a rise in force/pressure can be seen due to the friction between injection pin and barrel.

A peristaltic pump, or roller pump, is a type of positive displacement pump used for pumping a variety of fluids. The fluid is contained within a flexible tube fitted inside a circular pump casing (though linear peristaltic pumps have been made). A rotor with a number of "rollers", "shoes" or "wipers" attached to the external circumference compresses the flexible tube. As the rotor turns, the part of tube under compression closes (or "occludes") thus forcing the fluid to be pumped to move through the tube. Additionally, as the tube opens to its natural state after the passing of the cam ("restitution" or "resilience") fluid flow is induced to the pump. This process is called peristalsis and used in many biological systems such as the gastrointestinal tract.

A variable speed control box is used for controlling the vibration of the bowl feeder and stops the flow of parts to the out feed track via sensors. Vibratory feeders are utilized n many industries including, pharmaceutical, automotive, electronic, food, Fast Moving Consumable Goods (FMCG), packaging and metal working industries. It also serves other industries such as glass, foundry, steel, construction, recycling, pulp and paper, and plastics. Vibratory feeders offer a cost-effective alternative to manual labour, saving manufacturer’s time and labour costs. Several factors must be considered when selecting a parts feeder, including the industry, application, material properties, and product volume.

The Ballbarrow was a type of wheelbarrow designed by James Dyson and released in 1974 in the UK. It featured a moulded plastic hopper on a steel frame and a spherical plastic wheel. The original design featured a galvanised steel hopper, which was so robust that many are still in use today. Later, the design was changed to a plastic hopper. In prepasted wallpaper, a thin layer of glue is applied to the back of the paper. This process takes place in the factory before the wallpaper is packaged for distribution and sale. The quality of the adhesive used varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and even from batch to batch.
